When Nirvana played in Brazil, in 1993, Kurt Cobain got from a journalist some records by Brazilian indie bands. The one wich got him more impressed was
Killing Chainsaw, a mix of Jesus And Mary Chain, Sonic Youth and Wedding Present. Kurt praised the heavy drums, and later showed it to Dave Grohl. On the web you can find at least one picture of Kurt holding this record, and some interviews in portuguese where he mentions it.
Grohl was even more impressed with the Brazilian bands. The first time he heard it, he asked the journalist “God, it really sounds like Sonic Youth! Have you sent them a copy? I’m gonna play it for them!” And more: “It’s cool. It sounds like there’s good marijuana in Brazil.” But the Record he really loved was
Gash, from the
Pin Ups, a mix of Velvet Underground, Jesus And Mary Chain and Spacemen 3. “Gash is cool. I read the lyrics in the airplane, between São Paulo and Rio. They’re smart, wich is weird, portuguese speaking people being able to capture the humour and the subtleties of the english language. Their english is better than the american rappers’.”
By the end of the interview, he concluded: “Killing Chainsaw should sound less like Sonic Youth, although they make a pretty good hell with their guitars. Gash is great. Ale’s voice is beautiful and their lyrics are brilliant. I love desperate ballads”. Years later, in a 1996 interview, Dave still reminded Pin Ups when asked about his time in Brazil: “Those were the worst shows i’ve done in my life, embarrassing. But I remember I got to know some great bands, like Pin Ups. When I got back home their album bacame one of my favorite.
I have a sealed copy in vinyl of these two albums, both released in 1992 and sold out more than 10 years ago. If someone’s interested, send me an e-mail. I sell each for US$ 50, but it’s possible to make a discount if you want to take both. I can also post the records in mp3 for you to know it.
